A rovásírás a középkor folyamán funkcióját vesztette, ismerete fokozatosan gyengült, a latin írásbeliség természetszerűleg egyre kisebb területre zsugorította használatát. Amikor Telegdi János 1598-ban rövid tanulmányt írt a székely rovásírásról (Rudimenta priscae Hunnorum linguae), ábécével és mutatványokkal ellátva, néhány betűnek már torzított, hagyománytól eltérő alakját rögzítette, ami világosan mutatja, hogy az írás élő ismerete kihalóban volt` - írta 1981-ben rovásírás címszó alatt a Magyar Néprajzi Lexikon.

Nos, valóban meglehet, hogy a középkor végén visszaszorult a rovásírás használata, s az énlakai unitárius templom ősi jelekkel rótt felirata - `Georgyius Musnai csak egy az Isten` -, amelyet felfedezője, Orbán Balázs 1668-ra datált, puszta hagyományőrzésből született. A szabványos jelsor mellett feldolgozták a ritka alakokat, valamint a Forrai Sándor- és a Magyar Adorján-féle betűalakokat is. A rovásjelek sajátos írásmódjának megfelelően - értelemszerűen - mindegyikkel lehet jobbról balra és balról jobbra is írni. Hosszú Gábor egyébként egy különös véletlen hatására kezdett rovásírással foglalkozni. Jó öt évvel ezelőtt egy ismerőse Franciaországban látott egy kiadványt, amely Magyarországról került oda: Fischer Károly Antal 1889-ben kiadott, ritkaságszámba menő A hun-magyar írás és annak fennmaradt emlékei című műve volt. Amikor a könyvecske ezzel a sajátos kerülővel, fénymásolt formában újra hazaérkezett, a mérnökök rögtön hozzáfogtak a rovásírás számítógépesítéséhez. Az elkészült honlapra nemcsak a betűkészletek és a különféle, a szakirodalom által megőrzött emlékek kerültek föl, hanem a rovásírással kapcsolatos tudományos ismeretek rövid összefoglalása is.

Hosszú Gábor a pálos szerzetesek rovásírásáról beszél a legszívesebben. Mint mondja, a kérdés tudományos kutatói is csak a legutóbbi időkben kezdik tényként elfogadni, hogy a székelyek írása mellett - amelynek létéről nemcsak középkori krónikáink tudósítanak, hanem a fennmaradt emlékek jelentős része is ebbe a csoportba tartozik - alighanem a középkori Magyarországon használatban volt egy másik, a türk típusú rováshoz közelebb álló, legtovább a pálos szerzetesek által használt jelrendszer is.
